This week we pause to reflect on the indelible contributions made to the field of IONM by Dr. David MacDonald.
A true scientist and trailblazer in many aspects of intraoperative neurophysiology, Dr. MacDonald led and contributed to a multitude of research studies, position statements, and guidelines for optimal and safe practices in employing both motor and somatosensory evoked potentials. His contribution to the literature spans from the rare identification of uncrossed motor and sensory pathways in some patients, necessitating modified recording techniques, to recommendations for intraoperative somatosensory evoked potential recording.
Beyond his inspiring intellect, Dr. MacDonald’s colleagues remember him for his deep passion for teaching and sense of humor.
Our society, and field are forever indebted to Dr. MacDonald for his work and passion of neurophysiology. We offer our deepest condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
